How to choose a good food processor

I look at the stand mixer lately, and there is a lot on the market. They range from small to large, weak to powerful, white to tangerine. With so much out there, I had to step back and figure out how to choose good stand mixer is one. Of course it would be foolish to focus only on the appearance of the mixer. So after much thought and consideration, I realized that the choice of a good stand mixer I need to answer some important where, what and howQuestions.

Where will it go in my kitchen?
While this might not stand mixer, the first question that comes to mind when the decision is a guide to choosing a good, it is very important. I had to take a step back and look at my food carefully.
Do I have to space to save the mixer?
Do I have it back and forth on the counter?
Do I have to keep it in a closet when not in use?

Some of the stand mixer on the market today are verydifficult, especially those with larger capacities. However, the smaller space require to be stored and to use space. Many stand mixers have tilt-heads. If the mixer will be used on a counter with an overhead cabinet, it needs to lift its distance to the head. It would be terrible to have available, select a mixer stand, that was hard to fit or use in the kitchen space you.

What should I use?
When trying to choose a stand mixer, it isimportant to step back and think about the different things that stand mixer will be asked to do. In my country we use it to whip cream and butter. We do treat cereal, cakes, brownies and cookies. But we also have him work with pizza dough and baked bread. I use it to cook for other jobs, such as mashing potatoes and mixing up the ground meat. When I thought about these things, I realized that an entry-line machine would not last long in our house. I would be satisfiedevery time I used it and would probably wear on the engine very quickly. I liked the idea to add attachments to the mixer, the quantity of jobs it would help me to expand reach.

What is the best use for the mixer? A stand mixer will be used only occasionally, does not need to be very powerful. And individual batches of cookies does not take much space in the bowl. Take careful thought of what you want to use it for decision, as well, select aMixer.

How much will I do it with?
At first glance, this is identical to the last question. And while it is used, it really goes a step further. I stopped to think of how big the lots would have if I used the mixer stand. With my family, just do not cut dozen cookies 3 (except I do want a few days more in!). If I Cookies I make them in large quantities and then freeze some for future deals to make. I never make just one pie at a timebecause it went too fast. And remember mashing one or two pounds of potatoes. I make at least 6 pounds at a time. When I thought about how much I, I realized that I have a machine requires a large capacity and strong enough motor to handle this work.

Fortunately, many of the mixers on the market, how many cups of flour processed they can be evaluated. I pulled my recipes and began to compare what I needed with what could make the machine handle. But I have noticed a veryMost important. Most machines are all listed under cups flour. If you use whole grain bread or bread flour as I, the number of cups the machine can process reduced to compensate for the severity of the meal. would like to wish each case using a stand mixer you can handle good meal you in any kind

As the machine is built?
This was very important to me and encompasses many things. I was with the reputation of the company and the affectedSatisfaction of the product owner. What was the guarantee period and how the company works with problems? We never think about bad things happen, but they do sometimes. The more I thought about engineering, I was concerned about the nature of the used motor. It was all metal and durable? Was there straps that could wear out and break? I decided I wanted a machine that would last for many years, and a company that would stand behind this machine as well.

  • KitchenAid Artisan 5KSM150PSEMC Metallic Chrome 220 volt Overviews
  • KitchenAid's Artisan 220V stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 300 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off.The Artisan mixer's strong 300-watt motor delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily. The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl with ergonomic handle is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable. Unique Mixing ActionThe beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise; moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This unique mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl. Multiple Speeds10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job; from very high to very slow stir. It's easy to select the precise speed needed for a perfect mix.

  • I don't know why the term "soda jerk" stuck, because anyone who whips up luscious shakes is anything but. And this nifty Waring drink mixer is really easy to operate. First, slide the stainless-steel mixing cup up under the agitator and secure the lip under the cup holder, resting the bottom on the cup rest. Then, slide the control switch to low or high and that's it. It's versatile, too, and makes shakes or pancake batter, as well as whirring eggs and milk together for a perfect omelet. Best of all, it whips a cup of cream in less than a minute. And, if you're feeling swank, it mixes up a Grasshopper or Brandy Alexander in a snap. --C. Whitney-Ward

  • Waring PDM121 Drink Mixer, Ebony Reviews By Customers
  • I, too, was hesitant about spending this much $$ to make milkshakes; however, the kids love to make shakes and the standard blender is hard for them to clean (not to mention the sharp blades). After our first use, my 15-year-old son said that he was "Ecstatic!". Anyone with teenagers knows how hard it is to achieve an emotional response--normally I get a monosyllabic grunt.

Works fine, could be better made for the price - Paula - California, USA
My wife and I are happy with this mixer. I won't repeat what other's have said, but my only comment is the silver motor housing is made of shiny plastic. For the cost of this mixer, I would expect it to be made of metal. It does make delicious shakes and it's easy to clean.

  • I LOVE this mixer!! I have wanted a Kitchenaid for so long and I don't know why I waited! (Well perhaps the cost, but it puts what I used for years to shame) It certainly makes baking more fun... and in half the time!

I purchased this mixer at COSTCO 4 months ago. What got my attention then was the great rebate from KitchenAid - so watch for those. I used it ALOT during the holidays. Made great cookie dough and I am amazed at how fast egg whites whip up. I have mixed meat loaf in it also.(No more gross hands!!) I will be honest and say I have not made any bread dough with it yet, but that's next.

I do recommend getting a second bowl for the mixer so when you have to mix 2 different parts of a recipe you can just switch out the bowls.

The only CON I see is that you have to stop and scrap the bowl a couple times. You can't do it while mixing as the way the beater moves and completely mixes throughout the bowl. It mixes ingredients well and none left on the bottom, just the sides.

All in all this is a great mixer and I highly recommend it.

  • Universal Plus Kitchen Machine (w/ out blender) Reviews By Customers
  • This mixer is powerful. You have the main unit where you attach your bowl, and a secondary unit where you can attach a blender.

There are many, many accessories you can buy for this unit. Be sure if you buy accessories you buy for the correct unit as accessories for this model are NOT interchangeable with Bosch's previous all-in-one machine! I've already had to return one attachment because I made this mistake. Look for accessories that have a model number starting with MUZ6!

This machine tears up just about any food you throw at it. When you turn it on you can get the feel for the full 800 watts of power it is capable of by it's roaring sound. You may need to run to your circuit breakers to find a suitable plug for the unit, since 800watts is just about the limit most circuit breakers can take. It's doubtful you can run this unit along with another kitchen appliance at the same time in the same receptacle.

Cleanup is not fun, not fun at all. I did not like the design of the bowl in this aspect. There are plenty of crooks and crevices that dough gets in that take some scrubbing to get out. Also, the top/center of the bowl serves as the "gears" for some of your accessories, but when not using them, they catch quite a bit of food in them, and it is difficult to clean.

While on the subject of the bowl, other than cleanup, it's an awesome design. There is a removable splash guard around the rim that allows you to add flour to a recipe, while the unit is running without making a mess. You also have another lid that fits into the splash guard for the bowl to cover it should you need to rise dough.

My unit came with the blender, so I'll review it here as well. The blender is wonderful too. I can actually grind my own wheat in it for pancakes and cleanup is a snap. Also the design of the blades is ingenious as one blade is actually pointed downward toward the base to clear shop where most blenders don't touch. One problem I did have was with the blades and how they attach to the blender. They are removable, but when you put them back you need to really make sure that you tighten it well. If they are not tight enough, your blended battery goo will fall down into the crevices of the machine, which could possibly damage it. There are unfortunately small holes where this could easily occur. Unfortunately when you tighten the blades down, it's really difficult to get them untightened (Believe me, I'm a man, it's hard!). I end up having to get a pair of pliers and using them backwards (grip handles on the device) to get the blades out.

Another issue with the blender that has to potential to drive me nuts is the small removable top (not the main blender top, but the small plastic piece you can remove to stuff food down). There is a hole in it! Not large, probably about 1/4 inch, but it's still large enough that if you blend just right your stuff will come out of the blender. There is absolutely nothing you can do about this, shy of sticking your finger, a napkin or paper towel down it while blending. Bosch wanted this to act more like a drip funnel, but I just don't get the point of having a hole here.

Hands down, this is a great unit, and Bosch has a known reputation of creating kitchen units that last for years, even decades! I would definitely recommend this one to anyone serious about cooking in their home!

mixes really great, but cleanup is not fun - T. Funk - Moose Jaw, Sask,Canada
I had a kitchen aid before I bought the bosch. While it mixes dough really good, cleaning up is really not fun. With the kitchen aid, I had only the stainless steel bowl, and 1 attachment to clean. However, with the bosch, I have to wash the plastic splash shield, all those little paddle, and the bowl, the gear under the bowl...

  • best money I've ever spent - zinnia - UT
Last year I bought the new Bosch mixer. I've never had a stand mixer, but I read the reviews and talked to a few people who are serious cooks/bakers. So I spent the extra money and got the Bosch instead of some less expensive brands. I'm so glad I did!
I have used the mixer mostly for whole wheat bread. The motor is so powerful and efficient that it doesn't even slow down kneading the stiff dough. I can easily mix fresh ground flour (using up to 15 cups!), and get 4 huge loaves of bread (or 5 smaller loaves). I've baked bread every week since I bought the mixer. Haven't bought any at the store.
I've also used the mixer for huge batches of cookies, brownies & mashed potatoes. No sweat. I use the blender too, but not as often as the mixer.
I love it, my family loves it, and my only regret is that I've gone so long w/o one.

  • AWESOME, and what cleanup? - Unnamed -
Well, I must be missing something the other reviewers aren't. I used this machine to make my huge batch of cookie dough. As usual, I made a monumental mess. NOT the machine's fault, I make a mess of everything in the kitchen. But this machine handled the mixing so easily I couldn't believe it. My Heavy Duty Kitchen Aid was a huge hassle, with the dough always climing up and getting everywhere, plus it was hard to add ingredients. At least with the Bosch, all I had to wipe up were dry spills caused by me, not dough flung everywhere. For those of you who complained about food getting in the gears, try standing on you head to clean the gears on the underside of the Kitchen Aid. Or better yet, try throwing it in the dishwasher. Geez!! Now that machine was hard to clean! To be honest, most of the mess from the Bosch was caused by me turning it on with only dry ingredients and no top on the unit. I thought it would just slowly stir on low speed, like the Kitchen Aid, but it doesn't seem to do slow, and dry stuff flew everywhere. Beware. Always use the top. 8-)

But after all was done, I just put everything in the dishwasher, and it was all clean. What am I missing? Everything was perfect. The Kitchen Aid goes to the storeroom. I'm in love. I had bought cookie paddles, but couldn't find them when it was time to make cookies. So I used the dough hook, and it worked perfectly. That thing is massive, and gets everything mixed perfectly.

I consider myself an excellent critic of kitchen equipment, because in the kitchen I am sloppy, lazy and impatient (hey-know thyself). If something works well for me, it is because it does the job quickly, easily and well. The open top is a blessing in itself. Since I never measure anything, and dump it in right from the packaging, the open top is much less likely to cause spills than trying to fit the package opening into the Kitchen Aid.

  • KitchenAid KN2B6PEH Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl for 6-qt. 6-qt. Reviews By Customers
  • This bowl is AWESOME! It hold liquids and solids without any problems. It's just like the other bowl that came with the mixer! Really... who reviews a freaking bowl. It's a bowl. It has a hole at the top to put stuff in, and a solid bottom to keep things from falling out. If it were square, it'd be a box. I don't even know which bowl is the one that came with the mixer and which is the bowl that I'm reviewing now. Buy the bowl, m'kay? You'll be happy when you're making lots of batter and icing and you don't have to keep rinsing the one bowl. Bowls for everyone. Bowl, bowl, bowl... that word is weird now... bowl.

This bowl rusts! - Becky L. - Iowa
I recently purchased a KitchenAid 6 quart Pro mixer and this bowl came as a standard attachment. Although stainless steel, the bowl has a very shiny, almost chromed finish--unlike the bowl with my previous, smaller model KA mixer. The VERY FIRST TIME I put this bowl in the dishwasher (it specifically says "dishwasher safe" in the instruction manual) I was astonished to pull it out the next day to discover RUST all around the outside edge of the rolled upper lip/rim! The shiny finish appeared to have eroded just sitting overnight in the dishwasher, leaving multiple, ugly little rusty spots.

Well! I called customer service at KitchenAid (my mixer being only three weeks old, it was under warranty) and they had no explanation for how "stainless steel" could rust overnight, but they sent me a replacement. The bowl arrived quickly, I used it once, and then--taking no chances--it was washed by hand, and then up-ended on a dry kitchen towel, on the table, to finish drying overnight.

This morning, I picked up brand new bowl #2, and found even MORE RUSTY SPOTS than on the previous bowl! Virtually 1/4 of the shiny plating on the lip of this bowl has corroded away, leaving rust stains on the towel I wiped it with, and ugly black spots (after I rubbed away the rust) on the lip of the bowl.

I will be contacting KA again, but clearly there's some manufacturing flaw occurring in the plant in India where these bowls are manufactured.

  • KitchenAid KSM158GBCA 90th Anniversary Limited-Edition 5-Quart Stand Mixer, Candy Apple Red Reviews By Customers
  • When I saw this special edition mixer I knew I had to get it.

The glass bowl looks soo cool and the red has a nice metallic element that sets it apart from the regular mixers.

Other than the looks it's pretty much exactly the same as the regular mixers. However I was a little frustrated that it didn't come with a splash guard like the metal bowls do (although in my experience it hasn't really needed it, tho it is a nice accessory to gradually beat in dry mixes).

At first I was having some trouble getting egg whites to beat as well as a normal mixer, but after adjusting the height it was fixed.

Also check out the cool paddle blade with the spatula edges... great way to scape the bowl, and the red blade ends look really good in the glass bowl!

We gave this as a gift and the recipient loves her new red mixer! I personally cannot comment on the performance but the recipient says it works very well. I was able to order a free slicer attachment (usually -) by submitting the UPC and packing slip and we're waiting for that to arrive --- totally free and postage prepaid. Thank you.

I am very pleased with my new "hand mixer". It is light weight, very efficient, easy to clean, and quiet. I'd recommend this to everyone. Also, it is reasonably priced and gets the job done. In other words, I like my new
    appliance very much. Hazel

    It''s OK, but rusting - L. Skow - LA
I've used this exactly once, have had it for a month. I hand washed all of it when I was done and thought I dried it well, but the beaters have rusted up at the top where they go in the mixer and down at the bottom where the rivet is that holds the beaters together. Threw the box away after I had tested it to see if it worked, so Ill keep it, but mixing rust into my food isn't good.

  • Cuisinart SM-55BC 5-1/2-Quart 12-Speed Stand Mixer, Brushed Chrome Reviews By Customers
  • I research everything I purchase as much as I can and this mixer was no exception. I checked out comparable mixers (Sunbeam and Kitchen Aid in particular) I did side-by-side comparisons on these three mixers and decided on this mixer because the reviews by experts and users were very good. I wanted something that could handle bread dough. One of the features that I liked on this stand-up mixer is that the motor cannot get overheated. If it is getting too warm the machine will stop itself until it cools off. I like the timer feature also. The ease of removing and inserting the different paddles and the fact I can use the dish washer to clean the bowl and paddles is a huge plus to me. The splash guard that attaches above the paddle fixture allows you to add ingredients as needed without anything getting on the counter or the side of the machine. A point of interest. I also had the misconception that a Cuisinart mixer would be more expensive than a Kitchen Aid....not so, in fact my purchase was a few dollars less. I felt at time of purchase and still feel that I got the maximum bang for my buck.

Great Mixer - David - Mississippi & Wisconsin
I love this mixer. It's a workhorse that's quiet and doesn't jump around. This thing will run circles around a Kitchenaid. I use mine mostly for breadmaking and couldn't be happier!

We are very happy with the mixer. We have had it about a year. It is easy to lift out of the cabinet and onto the counter. Easy to clean. Timer is really helpful. And overall the design makes the mixer very easy to use.

  • Brand : KitchenAid

  • Product Overviews
  • KitchenAid's stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 475 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough; the 6-quart bowl can hold up to 11 cups of flour, which translates into as many as 192 sweet treats. This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solid in construction and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist; untwisting them is a bit trickier because the attachment stems are short and can be hard to grasp, especially if they get the least bit greasy. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base. Standing 16-1/2 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball (25 pounds), this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off. --Betsy Danheim

  • Product Features
    • 475-watt, 10-speed mixer with pouring shield
    • 6-quart mixing bowl holds dough for 3 loaves of bread
    • Electronic sensor, SoftStart mixing feature, overload reset control
    • Includes flat beater, wire whip, and dough hook
    • Measures 14-3/5 by 11-2/7 by 16-1/2 inches

  • KitchenAid KT2651X Epicurean 475 Watt 6-Quart Stand Mixer, White Reviews By Customers
  • About 12 years ago I surprised my wife with a KitchenAid CLASSIC mixer. I believe this mixer is 250 watts and it has always done a really great job. One day while we were shopping in Lancaster PA we saw in a store this 475 watt Epicurean model at a really great price and picked one up.
Buying that mixer was a first class move. The machine can do anything you want. My wife really does a lot of heavy duty baking during the winter months and that 6 qt bowl can really hold those double batches. This is the kind of mixer I wish we had while I was serving in our US Merchant Marines while working in the galley and so much of what we made was done by hand (almost 40 years ago).
My wife has this along with the Classic mixer that she uses for smaller jobs and she also has the hand mixer that's her favorite. We have really put our trust in the KitchenAid products but it is trust that they have earned by making the best products out there. We also have both their big and small food processors. Did I mention that before we purchased our first KitchenAid mixer we went through 3 brand new Sunbeam stand mixers. That's my fault due to seeing how cheaply they were made out of plastic I should have invested a little more and went with KitchenAid right from the start (yes we do learn by our mistakes) This wonderful company deserves all the credit that folks like my wife and I give them !

    "Enjoy" Joe Kopeck / Parkville,MD

KitchenAid no longer has my vote - - IDAHO USA
As an avid cook and bread baker I was especially excited to get a KitchenAid Professional model mixer. The brand had such an excellent reputation for quality and durability. After replacing the mixer 3 times for reasons from motor burnout to a badly wobbling head I finally gave up and asked for my money back which I then invested in a really fine piece of kitchen equipment, the Electrolux Kitchen Assistent (spelling is Swedish as that's where it's made). It is far more powerful, durable, sturdy and versatile. Would never go back to KitchenAid!

  • Great. until it stops working - Gemini16 -
I bought this and loved it! It's beautiful and powerful. This Thanksgiving, I attempted to make mashed potatoes and the lever/motor is not working properly. The machine turns on (at a medium speed only) and quits after 10 seconds. It will turn back on, but only at medium speed (no matter where the lever is) and will turn itself off after 10 seconds. It's just disappointing. No wonder they discontinued this model. I'm going to try to fix this-my dad is handy. I still love the looks & when it's working properly I love how powerful it is. I'm disappointed with this product as I only used it maybe 45 times, I guess I didn't get my money's worth on this product.

  • Known issues with Epicurean - S. Ziebarth-Roth - minneapolis, MN USA
After my KitchenAid Epicurean stand mixer died in the middle of a batch of cookies this morning, I decided to go online and do some research. Seems mine is not the only one to not start the first few tries or start in high speed only to cut out again. As of this morning, it just won't start at all. It seems there is a shift defect. My mixer is 10 years old (although the on/off shift seemed "iffy" from day one), so my warranty is long gone. I picked up a Cuisinart SM-55 with a 800 watt motor (largest of any stand mixer) and am THRILLED!! I love the tilt-head and the weight of the unit (I move it from cupboard to center bake island and back) - the spillguard and spout are ONE piece and don't need to be removed to change mixing attachments. Best of all? It's quiet in comparison to the Epicurean. Do some research yourself and check out what actual users of stand mixers say before you purchase. Also, determine whether a lift bowl or a tilt head are important to you. In using both, I wouldn't use a lift bowl again - too heavy, to hard to work with contents of bowl.

  • West Bend 41135 12-Speed Stand Mixer with 2 Mixing Bowls, White Reviews By Customers
  • I have baked for 20 years, and waited a long time for a stand mixer. I did not want one that took up my counter space. I have worked at making bread for years and wanted help to make three loaves a week, plus oatmeal cookies and a few other things.

Pros: this is a light portable mixer, love the two bowls and the hooks match the holes, square or circle, easy! easy to clean and run.
makes incredible cookies, buy a copy of GRAND CENTRAL BAKING and never go wrong!!!! and heavy cookie sheets. I have chicago mettalic sheets and are wonderful.

TO MAKE BREAD, UNDERSTAND BREAD. Bread is not fast!!! you can do proper slow mix,or fast" over night rest bread".

I have had wonderful results with the following Italian loaf.

2 cups water, 1 tablespoon yeast, one table spoon sugar, 2 table spoons olive oil,add one cup of flour , mix for at least two to three mintues With Cookie Dough hooks... add slowly 1/2 cup flour,,,, makes a thick pancake batter. Just let it run for 5 minutes.
Change off to the bread hooks,,, slowly add flour until you reach three cups....to five cups slowly,,,,, over 10 mintues.
    develops the dough.

let the machine and dough rest as needed, scrape bowl as needed,( every mintue) the dough will wrap around one hook, its ok, stop an let the dough rest down.
toss out on a flour surface and do a few strech and folds,
rest in plastic, oiled bag over night,in fridge, bake as rolls or pizza in 425 oven. works like a dream.

I use the big chicago mettalic french baking pans, lined with parchement paper for perfect baking results.

Made bannana oatmeal muffins while making bread, I love have two bowls!!!!! this was a lifetime buy for a frugal baker.

This mixer has taken a lot of mixing pain out of artisian loaves, and the prenix stage. DO NOT BE IN A RUSH, ADD FLOUR SLOWLY. Also do presoaks.

To really understand bread read the the first 100 pages of the Bread Bakers Apprentice , or the hard to find No Knead to Knead book,
Bake on for years in joy with this fine mixer...... it really works, like a saw, know thy tools....

Update in June 2010 , Am baking a lot of bread, up to 5 cups flour bread in this mixer, I am using Reinharts new Artisian Baking book and this mixer is doing great with 5 cups rustic bread, really a best buy at plus shipping. bought yeast in 2 lb package today , love amazon.

Worst mixer I've ever used, but it looks nice - B. Burr - New York
The mixer looks nice and blends in well with the rest of my stainless steel kitchen decor, but does not do a good job of mixing. The beaters do not reach all the way to the bottom of the bowls, missing some dry ingredients down there each time. When making a buttercream frosting (tested many times), large chunks of (room temperature) butter remain. It's a cheap substitute for my 1950's vintage Sunbeam. I will not be purchasing West Bend appliances in the future.

This is a good product for the cost. I was worried that it would be a cheap stand in stand mixer until I was able to afford one of the 0 ones. However, I was surprised at how sturdy, efficient and even quiet it was. It does exactly what it's suppose to do.

  • What a Disappointment! - Patient knitter -
Because I accidentally broke a glass bowl for my wonderful, but discontinued Black and Decker stand mixer for which no bowls are available, I needed to purchase a new mixer. After much research, I chose the West Bend stand mixer from Amazon. The mixer arrived in a timely manner, but was defective. When I attempted to eject the beaters without having used the mixer, one fell out without touching it, while the other was lodged in the mixer head and was difficult to remove. The beaters had been inserted properly, not only according to the instruction manual, but also by matching the templates on the mixer. The beaters are much lighter in weight than one would expect to find in a stand mixer. In addition to the problem with the beaters, the mixer appears to be very cheaply made. There are only three pads on the bottom of the unit to stabilize it on a counter. As a result, the mixer rocks on the counter. There should have been at least four pads to prevent this. I promptly returned the mixer and purchased a Kitchen Aid Artisan stand mixer with which I am thrilled. Don't get your hopes up or waste your time on this West Bend mixer.

  • I didn't need a machine this powerful,I bought it on the basis of it's low price. The mixer arrived faster than I expected (thanks Amazon) with two tiny scratches on pan lift arms caused by the pan not being secured correctly during shipping. I definately can live with miniscule marks and otherwise machine looks and operates like brand new. Mixer cost's 0 new and I paid 0 refurbished. Low price, very strong machine, excellent condition. You ought to see what it can do with garlic mashed potatoes or maple pound cake the neighbors ate up less than a hour later. Refurbished makes good sense. • KitchenAid 4-1/2-Quart Ultra Power Stand Mixer, Empire Red Reviews By Customers
  • Currently all the reviews on Amazon are for the Artisan series mixers, probably because of the extra 25 watts of power over the Ultra series. I got my beloved Empire Red Ultra from my sister, in brand new condition, because she got tired of my constant admiration (actually, covetousness)of it every time I came to visit her. She happens to be a very busy working mom who doesn't cook and bake as much as I do, so she sold it to me at her cost, and I think she now regrets it! At any rate, on to my review...

First off, let me say this baby is HEAVY...at nearly 25 lbs. I don't move it around very much. It stays in its designated space on my counter, and I don't even TRY to store it. I'm disabled, and just don't have the physical strength to tackle that. However, its weight is one of the many advantages of the machine, when mixing heavier items such as bread and cookie doughs. It obviously saves me a lot of hand and arm fatigue; a hand-held mixer is out of the question for me. It has plenty of power, and easily mixes 2 loaves' worth of bread dough with minimal bogging. The only thing that I would improve upon is I would add a way to store the cord neatly; but that is a small thing compared to how much I rely on it to help me cook.
From whipped potatoes to buttercream icing, this mixer does all that I require of it, and probably much, much more...I hope to be able to buy some of the attachments for it soon. At about less than the Artisan series, don't pass it up thinking that the extra 25 watts of power is the only way to go.

Red KitchenAid Mixer - Valerie L. Schlagal - West Texas
I've waited what seems like a lifetime for a KitchenAid and it lives up to all my expectations. The seller was great - item was delivered as described - no hitches - very quick and easy transaction.

  • 3rd time is a charm????? - M. Blazavich - Pennsylvania United States
I purchased this product new from Target in December 2007. By November 2008 the gears from levels 6 through 10 were gone. I did not subject it to heavy use, just your normal cake mixes, icings, mashed potatoes, etc... I engaged the warranty and Kitchen Aid sent me a new one. Just recently we realized AGAIN, the gears from 6 through 10 are gone. I called Kitchen Aid again to use the warranty and told them that this mixer kept losing the gears. After dealing with a rude customer service representative, I called back again. The new representative informed me that I could get the same mixer as a replacement free of charge or I could pay more and upgrade to a different mixer. I thought that was a good idea until I realized that even though they were advertising the new mixer I wanted at 0 I would still have to pay difference between what I originally paid and the MSRP. So instead of a better mixer for approximately which they have advertised on their website, I (because I am trying to be a loyal customer) am being punished and told I have to pay 5 more to get a better made machine. Talk about outstanding customer service. I thought this would be a similar machine and the company would be similar to the service and credibility that my Grandmother experienced when she purchased her mixer 70 years ago. However it is not the case with the new Kitchen Aid. I will definitely think twice before I purchase anything that is Kitchen Aid or Whirlpool!!!!!

  • What a work horse. - Kirstin Mason - Franklin, TN
I used this product so much over the Christmas holidays that I don't know what I
would have done without it. It is a work horse. Is consistently useful and does
exactly what it is supposed to. It is very heavy so if your lugging it around
that is bothersome. But I take that to a flimsy mixer any day. Easy to clean
up and really no down side that I have yet to find.
